Flappy Bird Flop
By Emily Hawkins
Can a video game or app be too
addictive? I’m sure most of Columbia State’s student population has a
smart phone or a device with apps available at a moment’s notice. Some
may argue Facebook or Twitter is one of those apps that are highly
addictive.
Well, what about Flappy Bird? This app
has come and gone so quickly, yet it started a revolution. Many people
call Flappy Bird the “new Angry Birds.” I can agree with this statement.
I have the app, and it is the most frustrating game I have ever
attempted to play before. I sit for hours trying to accomplish something
including a higher score.
The creator, Dong Nguyen, also agrees
the game is too addictive. He took the new “it” game off the IOS and
Google Play markets February 9, 2014. He took to Twitter to deliver the news, but still told Flappy Bird fans that he will still make new games. He said “Flappy Bird was designed to play in a few minutes when you are relaxed, but
it happened to become an addictive product. I think it has been a
problem. To solve that problem, it’s best to take down Flappy Bird. It’s
gone forever.”
It has disappointed many people. He
has been called inexcusable names for his choice. People with the game
still programmed into their devices are selling them on eBay for
thousands of dollars! Is that crazy? Was Nguyen’s decision justified?
Are you unhappy with this decision? Is it strange for a game to become
this addictive? What are your opinions?
